What are the differences between "pure substances" and "mixtures"? To know this, we must first learn the characteristics of pure substances and mixtures.

Pure Substances
  • has only one composition
  • has fixed or constant boiling and melting point
  • appears to be homogenous
  • the propeties of the substance are consistent throughout the sample
  • cannot be separated into simpler substances by physical means
  • classified as elements and compounds

Mixtures (Impure Substances)
  • a physical combination of two or more substances which may vary in amount
  • has variable composition
  • the different components retain there own composition and properties
  • can be separated into pure substances by physical means

Pure Substances vs. Mixtures

 Pure Substances
 Mixtures
has only one composition
composed of 2 or more substances physically combined
 has constant melting/boiling point
has varying  melting/boiling point
 has consistent properties
 components retain own composition properties
 can't be separated physically
