- Characterized by a sour taste
- Ability to react with bases to form salt
- Aqueous solution have pH less than 7.00
- And have higher concentration of hydrogen ion
- Good conductors
- Example: acetic acid
Bases
- substance in aqueous solution, contains hydroxide ions
- slippery to touch
- taste bitter
- Reacts with acid to form water and salts.
- Example: baking soda
Neutralization
- Chemical reaction between acid and base
- Commonly form salts and frequently water
Determining Acids and Bases Using Indicators
Red Litmus paper
- Acid - remains the same
- Base – change red litmus paper to blue
Blue Litmus Paper
- Acid- change blue litmus paper tored
- Base-remains the same
Methyl Orange
- Acid-change orange to red
- Base-change orange to yellow
Phenolphthalein
- Acid-become colorless liquid
- Base- become color red
Universal indicator
- Acid-red if strong acid and yellow for weak acid
- Base-blue for weak and purple for strong
Bromthymol Blue
- Acid- yellow
- Base- blue
